Currie began as a Canadian Armed Forces Base built as an employment project during the Great Depression and opened in 1933.
During World War II, the Currie Barracks functioned as an army training centre, providing units that supported the Calgary Highlanders and the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.
In the 1950s, the Currie Barracks became a major military centre thanks to its easy access to the West Coast via the Canadian Pacific Railway.
The base was officially decommissioned in 1998, and that’s when things really got interesting.
In 2001, the CFB West Master Plan for Garrison Woods was approved, leading the way for the former barracks’ redevelopment as a vibrant urban centre.
Construction began on the first single-family homes in the new community of Currie Barracks in 2010.
